Summary0003196: Weapon deflections are credited to the outermost layer of armor, even if an inner layer did the work
DescriptionGoing by what I've noticed in my own fortress-mode combat logs, it appears that the game engine is only checking penetration against the "top" layer of armor, and not lower ones -- for example, I've had dwarves take damage to their hearts from attacks that are only listed as penetrating their rope reed fabric cloak, without any mention in the log of the bronze breastplate or steel mail shirt they were wearing underneath that cloak.

Other users appear to be reporting the same bug, as per this thread:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=65787.0

Apologies if this is already reported, I didn't find it in a search for "armor."
Steps To ReproduceSend some dwarves into combat wearing multiple layers of clothing, against enemies bearing weapons that should easily penetrate some layers but have difficulty penetrating others -- e.g., steel and cloth clad dwarves vs. goblins.

Sorry, but after further extensive testing I think I can confirm that this isn't really a bug. I saw silver mail shirts deflecting steel battle axes because adamantine breastplates were worn underneath.

If it appears that enemies seem to cut through dwarves wearing both metal and cloth, it's probably just because of lashers and their overpowered whips.

It's possible that it's just a display bug, and that the underlying layer is actually doing the deflecting most of the time, only it's *showing* as the top layer in the logs for whatever reason. I *have* noticed points where injuries carried through several layers, but that could have been whips and could have been bludgeoning damage doing what it's supposed to do.

Without actually looking at the code it's hard to know what's going on precisely.

I have had similar things happen, and I agree it is probably a display bug. In every case where I checked, the target was wearing high quality armor under whatever was doing the deflecting.

-Edit- Make that almost every. See http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=4843
