Summary | 0003499: Can't build construction on tile, claims to be blocked by invisible creature
Description | When building a wall on one tile in my fortress, it constantly gets suspended - creature blocking site. I removed the partially constructed wall checked it but there was no creature visible. Trying again still fails. Walking over that tile was possible. Building a door succeeded but it stayed open all the time. Digging a channel below that tile didn't drop the "creature" one level. Doing a cave-in didn't kill the "creature".
Additional Information | Just appeared. I recently removed a bunch of wall and floor constructions to rearrange the room layout. I overlayed d - n and d - d commands. Saves: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11037 (0.40.24, 0009039)

Was this a reclaim? At any point did you use any utilities? |
I didn't use any utils. Is there any util for df_linux at all? I don't remember to claim anything in that area. Just now I managed to build a floor on that tile. I will deconstruct it and retry a wall... ...no success |
You might check if your mason has a pet. If so, the pet may be standing on the tile when the mason goes to construct the wall. You can see where this is going. |
I am having what appears to be the same problem in two locations in my fort. Any mason attempting to build a section of wall in these two specific locations will cancel with claim of a "creature occupying the space". I am on windows7 x64, running df 0.31.12 via Ironhand's tileset. I have watched the masons up until the point of cancel, the squares are empty. This site is not a reclaim. Stonesense visualiser in Debug Mode says the only thing in that space is: barfloor:354 Material:Inorganic/SANDY_LOAM(0,224) and Building:building_consructionst(6,0x1190ce4) Material" Inorganic/DIORITE(0,166) which are a sandy loam floor, and partially constructed diorite wall respectively. |
I have seen this happen when I used a memory hacking utility to kill creatures - the occupied flag on the tile never gets cleared, and walls can never be built there. If you didn't use any utility, there must be some way through normal gameplay that a tile's occupancy flag can get stuck on. |
I also seem to have encountered this issue. In my case, the mysterious creature blocking the site is (I believe) the same animal that the dwarves keep trying to feed, but can't reach because it is inaccessible, leading to constant spam reports detailing as much. I haven't used any memory utilities beyond Therapist, and I'm playing on a mac. Not a reclaim. Playing around a little, it appears I can build on that tile as long as the result doesn't block the tile. For instance, constructing a floor or placing a chair is fine, but putting a statue or wall there is suspended. I am willing to provide a save demonstrating the issue, I'm just not sure how best to do so. |
Upload the save (the whole region folder, zipped, ideally with a slight rename to make sure it isn't just named regionX) to the DFFD: http://dffd.wimbli.com/ Anywhere else, we can't be certain that it will remain online. Post a note here with a link to the file. |

I just got a double case of this in a relatively new fort (used LNP to launch and add setup tiles but thats it). It let me build a fortification in one of the spots, which both made me look up (as unlike a wall fortifications don't place a floor on top) and makes me think it's something small enough to fit through fortifications. One of my hunters had a firefight with some particularly agressive kea's around this spot and it's left a floating blood spatter above one of the squares, could be one died there and then the corpse fell? The fortifications seemed to remove the block on one square but didn't work on the other. Building and removing a floor above the other didn't help. There had previously been a refuse pile there the I moved back to make room so something could have decomposed away in that spot. Save is from before I tried the above. It's the walls on the surface next to the entrance ramp. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6602 sorry missed the note about renaming before uploading... (you can still do save file as on download? ;) ) |

I've had this problem sometimes, but it is usually the dwarf itself occupying the space, so make sure you watch your dwarf while he tries to build it. It's a rather annoying bug that your dwarf tries to build in the same space he is occupying. Just wanted to put this out there since it wasn't mentioned above. |

I think funUser has a point look at bug 5991 |
This bug has nothing to do with 0005991, since it predates it by well over a year - in fact, this bug dates back to 40d, if not earlier. |
We still need a save showing this 'bug'. mostevil's save was an occurrence 0005991 (it was created in 34.11). |
If anyone has a save showing this problem, please compress (.zip) your DF/data/save/region folder, upload it to http://dffd.wimbi.com [^] and post a link here. |
If this can be shown via a save to not be the result of a citizen or pet standing on the tile (or tasked item), then reopen this report and post a link to a save. |

I've seen this bug and it's analogous counterpart (the permanently open door) a few times. All of the permanently open doors were in masterwork dwarf fortress, so it could have been due to weirdness therein with DFHack, but me and MDFication (I think him too) both experienced this on the same challenge fort map while trying to pierce an aquifer. I remember him saying something about a phantom "creature occupying tile" report, and it happened to me on the same map. As the fort was a challenge fort, I lost soon afterwards, so I don't have a save, but this bug is certainly alive and well. |

shival provided a save from 0.40.24 in 0009039: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11037 |

I have a bug that sounds very similar to this (in 0.42.06). I'm trying to build two pumps, which are constantly suspended due to "creature occupying site", the only "creature" I can see is the dwarf trying to build the things. Channeling does not fix the problem. However, I can build floors on the suspect tiles, but the pumps are still constantly being suspended. Interestingly enough, building them the opposite way (pumping from the east instead) does not result in cancellation spam. Save available here: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12021 Edit: Further testing with building walls on the two problem tiles indicates that the single problem tile is the impassible one of the screw pump. Therefore, building the pump such that the passable tile coincides with the invisible creature, will allow the pump to be built. |
