Summary | 0003736: Can purchase impossible wooden trap components on embark
Description | The "giant axe blade" and "large, serrated disc" trap components both lack the [WOOD] token, preventing you from making them out of wood in Fortress mode. However, it is possible to purchase "giant [wooden] axe blades" and "large, serrated [wooden] discs" during embark.

Same in 31.16, including spiked balls. |
|
Wooden spiked balls are perfectly normal, along with enormous corkscrews and menacing spikes - you can make them at a carpenter's workshop, while the same is not true of giant axe blades or large serrated discs. The idea is that while it is absolutely possible to make piercing weapons from wood, it is not possible to make slashing weapons from wood. |
|
This may be related to a side-issue nutzy mentioned in his comment on 0005029, where wooden versions of metal-allowed tools were available at embark but not during gameplay. |
