Summary0003842: Artifact Weapons do not contribute to weaponskill improvements
DescriptionI have a Dwarf equipped with a gold Artifact mace in Dwarf Mode and he isn't gaining any mace skill through using it in combat.

Additional InformationNew fort in 31.18.

Forth year in the fort, and an immigrant Novice Macedwarf/Axedwarf/Marksdwarf has been recruited as the militia captain in a one dwarf squad. I equipped him with a gold Artifact mace, a bone Artifact buckler, and pig iron Artifact leggings.

I've built a combat arena where he's slaughtering captured cavern creatures. After slaying half a dozen various beasts, mostly Elk-birds, his Fighting and Dodging skills have increased a few levels. His Mace skill on the other hand, has not. It started at Novice and it's still at Novice.

Due to various wacky equipment bugs (like 0001161 and maybe 0000417), he might not actually be using the mace to attack. Please check his combat reports (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Reports) by pressing [r] and determine whether this is the case.

If he's immediately knocking his targets prone, he won't get any experience beyond the first hit (unless it's a forgotten beast, it seems).

I checked the combat logs before posting and I believe it was using the full name of the artifact mace. Though I'll double check tonight to see if he's not using his artifact buckler to bash it instead of the mace.

The weapon is pretty ineffective, so he tends to wail on them for quite awhile before doing any significant damage that results in knocking them over. Like I said, he's gone up a few levels in his Fighting skill, so he's certainly making some experience rewarding hits. I'll double check it all the same and post tomorrow.

Check for what Quietust said, too (although I think that's for unconscious targets, not prone ones per se?)

Alrighty, I played for a good couple of hours and the dwarf finally got some weaponskill improvement, it's just happening --really-- slow compared to his other skills. As it stands after 16 kills he went from Novice Macedwarf to Competent Macedwarf, while his Fighter skill went from nothing to Professional, and wrestling went from nothing to Skilled.

So I suppose it's just an issue of the Fighting skill leveling too fast.
