Baron/ess no longer just show up. I believe you have to wait for the next Liason to visit and you will be able to appoint a dwarf as the Baron/ess.

Has anyone seen that? The requirements for these nobles are fairly easy to meet, yet I've never seen any such option anywhere...

I was allowed to make a dwarf a baron once, but the game crashed shortly afterwards, and I've never been offered it again, despite the fact I loaded a save from the season before the liason arrived and made the offer.

Edit: I've just hit the 1 million mark for created wealth, 59 dwarves, just under 90k exported wealth and still no baron. Been playing this fort since df_31_02 was released, and aside from the bit above, no land holding nobles anywhere. I NEED MY DUNGEON MASTER!

I also have not received any nobles beyond the Mayor and Arsenal Dwarf. I've got 70 dwarves, ~5M created wealth, and ~100K exported wealth.

You should let mayor meet with liaison/diplomat when they come.
I had appointment screen appear twice. Once i refused, and next year, when he came again, appointed one of my cripples as baron.

However, even after receiving the baron, i have no option to appoint DM, hammerer and tax collector.
Pop 100 here, 600000 created wealth, 300000 exported wealth. Baron didn't go up to Count/Duke either.

Also cannot seem to appoint a baron. The liason hasn't mentioned anything about it yet. Sitting at 120ish dwarves with millions of created and exported wealth.

Update on my situation: After fruitlessly "meeting" with my military mayor for months, the liaison left unhappy. After that, a non-military mayor was elected, and the next time the liaison visited he met successfully with the new mayor and I was able to appoint a baron. So I would say it's confirmed that at least some instances of this are caused by the liaison endlessly trying to meet with a military mayor who won't perform civilian tasks.

I am haveing the same problem here. None of the mayors that have been around when the liason shows up are military but the liaison himself is announced as a Speardwarf. could be a reverse of Spiders Everywhere's problem.

Kamber, is your liaison successfully meeting with the mayor? The Speardwarf thing is a bug, but an inconsequential/cosmetic one AFAIK.

Managed to get a baron this time, but no sign of the dungeon master anywhere. This seems like a bug, especially since every animal barring elephants needs a good ol' DM to tame them. Gotta be careful you don't try and send a regular animal trainer to try and wrangle a groundhog, you don't know what kind of hell those things can unleash.

Different save to my last complaint, still updated to the newest version and hacked a 0 off the end of the required amounts in the raws to get a baron.

I'm also getting this. It's a modded game, but nobles are identical to the dwarf nobles. Multiple forts with over 100 residents, more than enough monetary values for even a duke on all of them. Should even meet the requirements for an adamantine king on most(if he still exists) never showed up.

I also considered the possibility of the old job requirements for barons needing to be met(at least so and so amount of stonework/yr, gemwork/yr, food industry/yr. etc.) No dice there either. I have never gotten a higher noble in DF2010, I'm certainly trying though.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, for most of my fortresses I found the adamantine well before I had 20 residents. Maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe the adamantine king flag interferes with the 'you can get a baron now' flag? I donno, just thinking out loud.

I doubt he's still there. I found adamantine in a fort with 150+ dwarfes and no king showed up. I got him after building enough roads (5k-7.5k road value, wich seems to trigger the 'become a mountainhome' screen) and giving offerings to the caravan. Besides that I never got any other nobles in several forts in different worlds though I definitly met the criteria evertime (in all cases before I struck adamantine).

Posting this quote from Toady FYI:

"If there is a lot of confusion, perhaps it is bugged. My understanding and what worked last time I tested was that you need to have a caravan leave when your pop is 20, you've traded 10000*, and you've produced 100000*, and then when the liaison comes the next year, you'll have an option to elevate a dwarf to baron. If that isn't working, there is some problem."

Oh, well, since this is already here and everything, I don't have to make a special bug. Six year old reclaim fortress, 160 dwarves (bastards keep having babies), well over a million created wealth, lots of imports and exports etc, roads made of silver and even the old 40d 25 of 4 tasks completed. No Baron yet. In any fort since since .31 came out.

Is having an accessable Trade Depot a requirement? I just realized that despite every caravan trading without a problem and liasons coming, meeting, and leaving fine, that when I pressed "D" it showed my depot was inaccessable. I also met the requirements by 10x. I will make my depot accessable and see what happens.

Still getting dwarven caravans, too? Have you exported 10,000 to the dwarves specifically? (I think you can view this in the Civs screen)

If so, then you should probably upload your save to http://dffd.wimbli.com/

It could be a problem with reclaimed fortresses specifically.

Interesting. Says Daetrin:

TOPIC TITLE: I finally got a Baron...

"And I had just happened to save right before. I decided to experiment, and I found that if I talked to the diplomat prior to the caravan leaving, I did not get the option to choose a baron. If I talked with him after it left, I did. The only thing I'd done different than what I normally do is I used stonecrafts as my main export, so I'd exported a lot of items (numberwise, valuewise it's only 15k).

Baron is probably slightly bugged, but the specific before/after caravan behavior might help some people get their Barons. Assuming that's repeatable at all in other games."

Well, I had this happen again in my newest .12 fort. However, on the same version and world I previously got one; the key difference is that I settled in a region inaccessible to all civilizations except dwarves. I'm going to see with my next fort whether you need to have "real" access to your civilization (i.e. not isolated from other civs) in order to receive the baron.

I have created 1.2 million and exported over 50,000 total, 37,000 to the dwarven civ. I have spoken with the liaison before and after the caravan leaving and I don't know what else there is to mention...

Does anyone have a save for a fortress generated in 31.12 (not a save upgraded) where you meet the requirements and the liaison isn't giving this option?

Yep, same situation again...both forts are pure 31.12 saves on a freshly generated world. This time, full access to the civilization (along with others) and tons of created/exported wealth, high population, adamantine.

I'll upload it when I get the chance.

I deliberately waited a good deal longer (well after the caravan left) than usual to conduct my meeting with the liaison and I am pleased to say that he offered me the Barony. Mind you, nothing else was substantially different in the trading process other than I offered some raw adamantine... to be 'symbolic,' I suppose.

Vercingetorix

2010-08-17 18:35

reporter   ~0011870

Okay, going to give that a test. Any rough idea of how long you waited?

If the caravan were physically off the map when you met with him, perhaps the problem lies in a trigger regarding whether or not the caravan makes it away safely in the same year that the land holder trigger for receiving a barony is fulfilled.

I'll report back once the next autumn rolls around.

Miuq

2010-08-17 20:45

reporter   ~0011875

Hmm, it was no more than two months. I waited until the caravan was completely off of the map and then waited probably a month after that before I un-busied my mayor.

Another thing that I wanted to mention is that over the course of my last year I had built roads. I know that is not something that should be involved, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't leaving any vital stuff out, in case it is actually involved.

Vercingetorix

2010-08-17 22:29

reporter   ~0011880

Baron is CONFIRMED! Just got him in my game.

Specifically in my case I waited until the caravan actually departed the map before finally allowing my mayor to meet with the liaison. Upon doing so, the option to promote one of my dwarves to baron was offered immediately. I was constructing some roads at the time but I had already built a tile earlier in the game to test whether this was a requirement.

This means it's almost certainly a requirement that the specific accompanying caravan leave the map successfully prior to meeting with the liaison; I can't test whether or not this is the case as opposed to the caravan having simply "departed", but I know I've had caravans depart before without leaving the map and no such option was provided. It's presumably also a requirement that the land holder trigger is met prior to this caravan departing as well. Or, it may not be, depending on how and when the amount along with the caravan is added to exported wealth.

Unfortunately, I didn't make a copy of the pre/post liaison meeting save prior to going forward with it for further analysis. However, I'm going to see whether this will also happen with the count/duke ladder as well so there should be more opportunities.

It appears this is now testable, so we should be able to reproduce it in any 0.31.12 game we want. If we're lucky, this is the specific issue that'll need to be resolved in order to fix the nobles.

Vercingetorix

2010-08-17 22:38

reporter   ~0011881

If you'd like a current copy of the save I can upload it to the depot, but it's presumably no different from yours at present in terms of the overall conditions.

The key is to reproduce this on another fort, the closer to the actual trigger values the better. Hopefully some other people will notice this, but if not I'll probably just create a forum thread to get others to try it out.

The two vital requirements appear to be:

1. The actual LAND HOLDER requirements in the raws

2. The caravan must leave the map successfully prior to trading with the liaison; this is a more specific interpretation of the requirement that the caravan leave successfully when the population is at least 20, but apparently the trigger relies on it happening prior to the meeting in order to fulfill it and lead to the baron.

Another potential one:

1. Roads. I did have a road outstanding from pretty much year one (a crappy rough rock road near the fort that went nowhere), but I built out some stone block roads during the year as well. I doubt this is a trigger but I'm not sure.

Going forward, the next big goal will be getting additional nobles. If this caravan aspect is the only issue that's affecting them, it should hopefully be no huge problem eliminating this bug for the next release.

Miuq

2010-08-18 01:24

I've got seasonal autosaves so I am going to conduct the interview with the liasion before trading and before the caravan leaves. Hopefully he won't offer the Barony. More soon.

Duke is confirmed. Only one left is the king, and from there seeing if anyone else shows up. I looked at the raws for then but I can't see any reason why there's a problem, except maybe something to do with the way they're appointed.

Vercingetorix

2010-08-21 19:52

Got the king, but that migrant wave pushed me over the pop limit so I have no idea if anyone else will show up.

An important fact here is that when idle, the baron/whatever shows "Noble" in purple as their job status while the King simply says "No Job" like any other dwarf. He also doesn't flash.

This may be indicative of inconsistencies in the code that are making it impossible for the other nobles to trigger.

For further clarification, you must wait until the caravan has left the map before you allow the meeting with the liaison to even begin - if the "I am your liaison from the Mountainhomes. Let's discuss your situation." message shows up while even a single merchant is on the map, you won't be able to select a baron or upgrade to a count/duke.

I ended up installing a pitchblende lever in my mayor's bedroom so that I could prevent him from meeting with the liaison, but occasionally he would go On Break and hold the meeting anyways.

The only thing you need is to make sure the caravan leaves the map before you meet with the liaison. Once it's gone, it'll trigger and you can get the baron/count/duke.

Kipi

2010-11-07 23:24

reporter   ~0013671

I need to test this a bit, but it seems that the check liason does for offering barony only takes account ANY trading caravans visited you that year. I noticed this after I modded dwarves to be active both spring and autumn, and twice I have been offered barony when the liason came with autumn caravan, even though I did not trade enough with either caravan and autumn caravan was still in my trading depot.

So, it could very well be that one caravan must have left your fortress before conducting the meeting, it doesn't matter which season that caravan visited and how much you traded with any caravan that year as long as you have traded enough with any caravan from dwarves.

Quietust

Kipi

I can confirm that this has been fixed at least partially.
I think there is still some issues, as I had met the requirements and the next time liason arrived I didn't get the option. I traded enough to meet the requirements again, and when the liason arrived next year I finally got the option.

So, when the liason arrived first time after I had met the requirements (trading done with the previous caravan) I didn't get the option, but year after I did. I need to test this out a bit more before making any more assumptions.

I got the offer to become a barony without having to do any special tricks/exploits in .18.

Reminder sent to: Cespinarve, d4ftfad, derigo, Greiger, jeffb, jimi12, king doom, Kipi, Miuq, Neshel, slink, Steely Glint, Thratur

Have any of you NOT received an offer for the Baron after meeting the requirements in versions 31.17 and above?

Please note if your fort was generated in a previous version and imported or if it was newly generated in 31.17 or above.

Kipi, regarding your note at 0000519:0013961, have you experienced having to meet the requirements twice in other instances?

I am getting a Baron now, in 31.18 and 31.19. I never played 31.17 and so cannot comment on that version.

No problems with barons here.

Never got a fortress that far to get count/duke, so can not confirm is those works as well, though I believe so...

Given the feedback and Toady's release notes for 31.17 (pointed out by Quietust 0000519:0013695), I'm adding this to that version's change log.
