Summary0000539: Non-burrowed smelter fails to recognize reaction agents.
DescriptionOr at least bituminous coal. Got down to the first cavern, about 23 z-levels deep, unearthing plenty of ores and fuel for industry, but my smelter refuses to recognize the coal. As in, at all. I've tried putting the material and smelter in the same burrow, putting one of each in a burrow, and both in separate burrows, but have been unable to devise a workaround.

I haven't been able to determine if this is just coal or not, though, because curiously, in an issue that may or may not be related, I am unable to produce charcoal either, though the issue is different. Despite having the labors turned on, no one assigned for furnace operating performs the task.

I'll endeavor to reproduce this but it doesn't seem to have any readily apparent cause, so I can't say for sure. It may very well be related to another, similar reaction and burrow bug, but unlike derigo's report (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=434) this one is sans burrow.
Steps To Reproduce1) Dig greedily, Dig... well, not necessarily deep. Deep is not required at all.
2) Find fuel for coke.
3) Build smelter.
4) Gasp in dismay as the Smelter fails to recognize the materials.
5) ????
6) Profit!
Additional InformationA possible cause is that I tried screwing around with the reactions and custom buildings. I'll make a new world with, and another without, these modified raws to see if that's the cause.

"I am unable to produce charcoal either, though the issue is different. Despite having the labors turned on, no one assigned for furnace operating performs the task."
Refined Coal(fuel) is produced at a Wood Furnace by dwarves with the 'Wood Burner' job activated, (its in the farming section of jobs). The reason wood burning is a farming job is because its used to make fertilizer and lye, so its not totally counterintuitive.

I suspect that your problem is that you have no fuel with which to make the coke out of the bituminous coal. It costs 1 fuel to make 2 coke(which are fuel). Magma smelters eliminate the need for the smelting fuel, which is one of the reasons they're so awesome.

Bah. Now I feel rather stupid.

Time to redact this, I guess.
