Summary | 0007789: Falling logs get stuck on another tree, then fall unpredictably when that tree is felled
Description | Logs may sometimes fall on tree-cutters, injuring or killing them, depending on where the log makes contact. In my case, it was a legendary wood-cutter whose head exploded into gore after being struck by a falling acacia log. I was cutting from the base of the tree.
Steps To Reproduce | Assign a dwarf to do nothing but chop trees for a couple of years.

Why wouldn't this be intentional? Woodcutting is a hazardous job. |
I'm not sure what the mortality rate is for wood-cutting in 40.05, but it seems to be a lot higher than the mortality rate for wood-cutting in real life. Or maybe I was just incredibly unlucky. Haven't played enough to find out yet. |
I've noticed some logs falling on dwarves in prior fortresses I had. Was your embark a heavily forested area? From what I noticed logs sometimes landed and got caught in other trees, sitting ontop of branches. When the tree with the branches is cut down the logs on the branches fall (for me they hit the dwarves but didn't do anything because they 'had no force') I never had fatalities, but these were short trees. |
If the goal is to be as dwarfy as possible, I would think you would want leather armor and a helm to be enough to protect you from any falling timber. Maybe an option on designation for directional felling to give it a bit more realism and less random dwarf injuries. |
