Summary | 0000828: Dwarves will not haul cages to animal stock pile.
Description | Dwarves seem to ignore that an animal stockpile has been made, and will not place cages, empty or full into the stock pile. They will however place cages in traps or where I 'b'uild them.
Steps To Reproduce | Place an animal stock pile down anywhere, and have cages ready to be stockpiled.
Additional Information | Pathing doesnt seem to be an issue here, as I've even tried placing stockpiles down in or near public places where pleantyof dwarves path thru on their way to other places.

parent of | 0004929 | resolved | Dwarves don't bring cages to stockpiles. |
Is it just empty cages or have you tried trading for animals in cages? I know my dwarves have hauled caged animals to the animal stockpile, and I think I remember empty cages being there too. |
Its all cages. Empty, and filled cages (Trap, assinment, trading). For whatever reason they just dont want to take them to the stock pile. |
I have animal stockpile full of empty cages here, so I can't confirm this bug. |
This just started happening to me (from cage traps) and I've got a save game - just not sure where to put said save game. It doesn't seem to be a pathing issue, since I can have the occupied cage built in my zoo. However, i tried to release a creature from one of these "not deposited in the animal stockpile" cages and it _seems_ to spawn a new cage with the creature in it rather than uncaging it. I'm not sure that it spawned a new cage, but I do know that when I un-assigned the creature that it suddenly showed up in cage up one and left one space from where the cage originally was. I could then build that cage (b-j), and the animal was in it, but trying to un-assign it produced the same behavior. And it still won't be taken to the animal stockpile. Might be related to 0000172 |
I have a current cage stockpile with both caged animals from the caravan and empty cages (from the caravan) |
I have 3 cage stockpiles. They seem to be working fine until I tell a stockpile that only accepts empty cages to take from another stockpile that only accepts empty cages. The dwarves try to move the cages, but never pick them up. In order, a dwarf walks to the tile with a cage to be moved. Walks 2-3 tiles toward the new stockpile, gets a question mark and returns back to the cage, without ever moving it. |
Anyone having this issue in an updated version (31.18 and above) that is not related to burrows? |
I too am experiencing this issue. It first appeared when my cages started catching trolls during a siege. My animal stockpile was no longer accepting cages, and no one was reloading the cage traps I have. I thought building more cages would maybe solve the problem. I now have three pages of cages in my carpenter's workshop because I wasn't paying attention. Cages WILL be moved from a (d)ump order though. I'm also now having issues moving animals between cages as well. If it helps, I have A LOT of caged animals. Perhaps there's a limit? Edit: This is in version .25, btw. |
Bugged saves go here : http://dffd.wimbli.com/ In the bugged saves folder, obviously. |
I'm having a similar issue, but I think mine is pathing related. I get cancellations for store in stockpile. Are you sure the mechanisms and cages are not forbidden? Mechanic labor enabled? Do you get cancellation messages? By the way, how do you keep lots of caged animals alive? Don't they die on you? Or do you mean goblins? |
Goblins, Trolls, and various animals without the grazer tag are kept in the cages. I probably have about 80+ things caged up in total. I'm wondering if maybe I just hit a hard cap on trapped creatures. No burrows issue, no forbid issue. I'm thinking this isn't a pathing issue, as I've set up various other stockpiles to put the cages. Dwarfs will deconstruct and dump the cages, but not move them to a stockpile. When I upload (first time for me) how much of the save do I upload? Do I just upload the entire region file? The game originally wasn't like this either. In the beginning of this embark, I was setting up and reloading cage traps just fine. I could swear it all started happening when trolls came in with the siege. |
80? Only 80? Don't worry about that. I've had hundreds (goblins mostly)! Try getting adamantine into a artifact - and watch the goblins roll in! I prefer glass cages, which take a while to setup. I usually have almost 300 or so before I start to get rid of them. Another thought - do you have anything hidden were the animal stockpile is? Dwarfs will not stack cages on anything hidden, even (troll robe). What if you make a new stockpile? Also, do you have a lot of idlers? It seems cages are pretty far down on the "to do" list. To upload a save, just zip up the whole "region1" directory. For future version, you just have to put that into the saves directory. |
Nothing hidden, and I made a few new stockpiles to see if that was an issue. I'm a little confused on uploading the save here. Do I also need to sign up for the place that was linked for bugged saves? When I used my log in info for here and for bay12 forums, neither worked. |
You'll need a new registration at Dwarf Fortress File Depot in order to upload. |
I'm also getting this bug - and like others it was working fine until I got hit by a heavy siege. Any workarounds figured out yet? |
Ok... weird - just randomly I check my empty cage stockpile and they are now stockpiling cages like normal. edit: I figured out what triggered it to return to normal, I think. I looked in the small stockpile and saw that all the caged animals that I just bought at caravans were all there. I think buying and hauling the traded creatures somehow triggered my dorfs to start hauling them all again. |
I have the same error, and I also believe it's related to a large siege. Buying animals doesn't help in my case - they don't get hauled, and nothing else does. edit: I can rule out burrows, pathing, stockpile space, job priorities, etc.. I actually had them dump every cage from my animal stockpile and after reclaiming them they didn't move anything back - my animal stockpile stayed empty. |
@mangelsdorf - can you upload savegame? |
Reminder sent to: acetech09, cameroon, dirty foot, mangelsdorf, Monteux, tcei Despite the plethora of reports on this bug, we have yet to get a single save showing the problem. If any of you have a save where this is happening, please upload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com and post a link to it in the bug report. You will need a new login for that site. Compress (.zip) your region folder (DF/data/save/region). Please have the save zoomed to the appropriate piles or use the in-game note system to mark the affected areas. |
If anyone else has a save, please post it following the guidelines above. If you can corroborate the report, please submit a detailed description of your situation. |
I'm suffering from the same problem. Cages are not being hauled, despite there being no burrow, stockpile or pathing issues. I fear it might be generated due to a caravan dying and leaving behind caged animals which were added to my stocks, prior to that everything worked fine. Registering to upload a save with points locating everything useful as soon as I can get registered on DFFD. edit: There seem to be issues with creating a DFFD account, is there anywhere else I can put the save? |
The caravan issue sounds vaguely familiar, and might have caused the problems. The other thing that could cause it is having lots of animals (but not goblins, I've had lots of those in cages without problems). Having stockpiles take from other stockpiles could cause it too. Were you moving animals around when the problem happened? Blailus, as a workaround, this is what worked for me: 1. delete all your animal stockpiles 2. exit the game 3. load the game, and designate them again (but don't restrict them). I may have done it two or three times before it worked. Once they start hauling cages again, then restrict them to the type you want. Does that fix it for you? That might indicate that the stockpiles were corrupted. If you put the file up anywhere (http://www.mediafire.com/ or http://megaupload.com ?) then I can upload it to DFFD. |
I'm uploading the save now, but I'll try that workaround in a little bit and see if that works. Edit 1: The file is located here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5324 Edit 2: I tried your work around, no joy. Tried forbidding all of the cages I have and reclaiming them hoping that might help, didn't matter. One other thing to note is that I have two tamed blue jays that show on my animal screen but not anywhere else. Any idea how to find them and rid myself of them? They appeared at the same time that this bug did (or nearly). Edit 3: While trying to figure this bug out I figured "Lets just atom smash all the cages on the map, and remove all my cage trap designations. Got down to 4 cages remaining (2 gobbo, 2 chicken) and one of the 4 (atomed them all at the same time) caused the game to crash (or possibly a combination of them, haven't tested that yet). I'm going to try using DFHack's autodump destroy to bugtest more thoroughly but something is definitely wrong. I just hope that after I get that fixed, it allows me to reuse cages properly. |
I've loaded it up. The jays and chipmunks are in the cages on the Z=144 level, lower right side, by the cages with the moose corpse. I don't know if this is causing the problem or not. As soon as I loaded it "Vile force of darkness" joy. I think I figured out the defenses, but I gave the surgeon some practice :) Edit1. This game also has the "indefinite in patient in traction" bug and some weird job issue. There is a job of building a chair, but it gets generates a cancelation because it isn't available. I finally just canceled the job. No progress on the cages yet. |
Well I managed to use Autodump destroy to delete all the cages, I'll report back after supper if making additional new cages and new stockpiles solves this issue (or at least is a workaround) |
Hmm... Now I checked http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/print_bug_page.php?bug_id=4929 and tried the contents, namely: "1: In the Standing (o)rders menu, are your dwarves set to gather animals? 2: Do your idle dwarves have the Animal Hauling labor enabled? 3: Can your dwarves reach both the cages and the animal stockpiles? 4: Are both the cages and stockpiles located in burrows your dwarves are permitted to enter? 5: Have the animal stockpiles been cleared of stone?" 2-4 were good to go, but I must have accidentally turned off gather animals in the orders menu at some point. Perhaps that's everyone elses issue with this as well. For clarity, (o) (a) solved this issue for me. |
Great! Sometimes the most obvious solution gets overlooked! |
@Kogut - Sorry, I didn't get notified about your response for some reason. @Dwarfu - Got your reminder by email but only just got around to it. I came back here to upload my save file, and tried some of the new suggestions that had been posted, and it was (o) (a) for me as well. Such a subtle problem, but obvious in hindsight. I must have accidentally hit (o) (a) some other time, among a mash of keystrokes. DF is the vi of gaming. Anyway thanks very much for the suggestion that fixed my problem! |
blailus, thanks for the follow-up - I've made 0004929 a child of this report to make it easier to find. Thanks for transferring the 'checklist.' mangelsdorf, good to see it resolved your issue as well. It is quite possible there was something to this way back in 31.01 that may have been incidentally fixed in a following release or there may have never actually been a problem other than user misunderstanding/error. The only real active issue remaining seems to be Monteux's at 0000828:0004820. I'll leave this open until the next release to give the others a bit more time to respond, but there isn't any reason to keep this open if no one can reproduce it. |
As previously stated, it seems issues related to this have been user-resolved. I tested Monteux's problem and it exists through version 31.06 and not in 31.08, where I successfully daisy-chained take-from cage-only stockpiles, both near and far. There is nothing specifically in the file changes or release notes that point to a fix. I'm going to resolve the greater report as no change required, with special consideration for Monteux's problem as fixed in 31.08. |
