Summary0008680: Chopping down multi-tile trees sometimes leaves Open Spaces
DescriptionI found a Highwood tree which was composed solely of a 3x3 trunk at ground level. It seemed to have been stunted by an alder tree, which was branching out the next Z level up and cut it off.

I went to cut down the tree and happened to look at the ground it left behind. Two of the tiles are now Open Space, looking down at the roots of the alder!
Steps To ReproduceFile is at http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10357
Additional InformationThere are logs on those Open Spaces in the save I included, I just (h)id them to get a better look.

Got the same thing in 0.40.23, but in this case I'd decided to cut down the tree to make the roots surrounding my stairwell look tidier. The silty clay walls surrounding my staircase are now visible, but there is a hole in the ground making the central staircase of my fortress open to the elements (and goblins).

I found this because the tree that was chopped down dropped some of its logs into my fortress' central stairwell!

In my case the tree was not a multi-tile tree; just a single tile (on this level at least). The open space is where the tree used to be, and therefore also the square that was designated for cropping.

^ It seems to fit in with the general floor-removing tree weirdness so I'd definitely say so.

SteveTheRed, that sounds more like 0008469 , since you had an open space underneath.

In the case of this report, the tree left a hole even though I hadn't yet dug out a single tile on this embark.

I have suspected that 3x3 trunk trees sometimes grow where there isn't a 3x3 area of flat ground. Unfortunately I didn't think to check.

The 3x3 tree in this save is on flat ground.

I think it probably has to do with the root areas overlapping. My best guess is that a tree assumes that, if the ground underneath it is solid, it will have its own roots down there; so, since the roots underneath that bit of the Highwood were from a different tree, it treated them like open space?

Started a new embark in 42.03 to test out the new seed-harvesting functionality, and happened to re-create this issue. Haven't dug out a single tile, but cutting down a 2x2 ginkgo trunk left 2 Open Spaces over unrevealed earth.

The open spaces in question are just to the left of the top left corner of the big food stockpile.
