Summary | 0008758: Civilians in combat refuse to use picks or axes
Description | I just watched a mob of my civilians take on a wild cave troll and swiftly knock him out. While I am very excited that the new combat changes allow civilians to gang up on enemies like this, I noticed that the mob was unable to kill the unconscious troll. This was surprising since every dwarf was carrying either a pick or axe (since I intentionally assigned either mining or woodcutting to everyone). A review of the combat logs proved that every civilian chose to punch the unconscious troll in the head, causing only bruising of the muscle. Several dwarves became tired and passed out from exhaustion during the fight. I eventually drafted a militia (using the default metal armor) to end the fight. The militia quickly killed the troll with a pick to the head.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Assign either mining or woodcutting to civilians 2. Arm all civilians 3. Wait for civilians to become involved in a melee with a wild enemy 4. Observe that civilians refuse to use their weapons
Additional Information | May be related to Issue 0001451 May be related to issue 0008157 The save file from 0008157 probably shows this bug, based on the reporter's comments. I do not have a save from the fight itself. I can post the combat log to Pastebin upon request.

This may be connected also to 0007541 where dogs are not using their stronger attacks, too. |

Further combat observations: -A civilian climbed over my fortifications (carved wall) to attack a blizzard man that came with a goblin siege. He died soon after. -Marksdwarves refused to climb over the same fortifications to attack goblins even when out of ammo. -A civilian was attacked by a berserk dwarf (failed mood). Both the berserker and the civilian were armed (woodcutting axes) and both used their weapons in combat. Sadly I have lost this fort, thus I cannot provide any save games. |

Unconsciousness seems to be the issue. Just watched several game weeks of punching a giant toad, 10-15 civillians, woodcutter and miners among them, a human vampire diplomat joined too: -While the toad was conscious a variety of attacks were used, biting, kicking, scratching in all available body parts. (The tool users hadn't arrived yet) -After the toad passed out only punches to the head for two weeks. Tame animals that arrived at this stage completely ignored the fight, most dwarves still joined. -Novice+ wrestlers still grabbed a limb occassionally, but did nothing with it, just let go a bit later while continuing to punch with the other hand throughout. -The fight was resolved in a strange manner, when a miner passed out from exhaustion and his very next action was to finally use his pick on the toad... the "regains consciousness" line was missing in his report! It was present for everyone else who took an involontary nap during the battle. |

Unconsciousness is not the issue. They don't use carried weapons in combat regardless if they're not in the military. |
