Summary0000895: Items disappear (become invisible) after getting pushed by flowing water, burning in magma, or encased in ice
DescriptionItems are still there and can be tracked via stocks menu, dumping them from there works too, makes them reappear. Probably caused by me digging channels next to pool to get water level down and make ramps-->Items moved with flow? Corpse and all was visible at first, now only quiver, bolts, 1 sock are visible. Zooming in from stocks works too but no display on the tile.
Steps To Reproducewell, have a hunter dodge in a pool from an attacker - pretty hard to reproduce
Tagsflow, hunting, owned item, water

Yeah, there was an old bug where items that got pushed around by flowing water would become invisible. Guess it's still around.

k - added a tag "old bug?". pretty minor anyway

Confirmed. I had a soldier fall into a pool and was trying to make it shallow enough to retrieve his corpse and effects. This activity resulted in some flow and his corpse and several items disappeared.

The items still show up in stock, and if I zoom to them it selects an apparently empty square in the pool where they presumably are.

Here's the specific old bug:

# 000525 □ [dwarf mode][flows] items that were pushed around by water didn't show up with look command

I just had this happen with magma - a Goblin siege managed to slaughter a Human caravan while standing inside my magma trap so I turned it on and let them have it; as a result, I now have an invisible glob of melted burning donkey cheese that won't disappear from my stocks screen.

This also happens to anything that gets encased in ice - you can't 'k' over the items, though the stocks screen still lists them and you can zoom to them.

See note at 0002884:0011249 for a sock that was lost in magma and is generating spam messages for claiming attempts.

This happens constantly for me with my magma goblin dumping chamber.

1. Fill chamber with magma
2. Drop in 20+ armed/armored goblins to ensure enough iron items left over. Testing with just a few goblins may or may not reproduce bug.
3. Empty chamber into larger cooling chamber via a door switch. The stack of iron helms and such will scatter into the second chamber with the magma flow.
4. Wait for 1/7 magma to cool & disappear.
5/Result. Seemingly random selection of iron items that are invisible (graphically) but if you unForbid them via stocks screen dwarves will come to drag them away. 'K' over invisible objects *before* dwarf arrives will only show visible items if both visible/invisible occupy the same spot. They reappear (graphically) the moment a dwarf picks them up.

Still occurs as of 31.25.

This is happening in my goblinite collection chamber where items are washed off the narrow path of doom by water from a large cistern above.

I've put a save on DFFD (bit big, I'm afraid, it's a mature fort): http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4427

I posted a bug marked as a duplicate. I'm sure it's the same issue, but I'd like to note that in my particular case, the items disappeared from the stocks menu as well.

Yeah I was trying to pump water away from drowning victims so their corpses could be retrieved, and they disappeared!!

JasonMel's save from 0001581: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5459

It appears the body and stones, though not hidden have been displaced because of a cave-in and being in water.

See his notes at 0001581:0019462 and 0001581:0019466 and mine at 0001581:0019468.

Since it turns out that the stones may be relevant too, I should mention that the 1x2 channel the corpse is in didn't have any stones in it at all before the cave-in. They were very probably from the stone stockpile to the west that was "destroyed" by the cave-in.

Happened to me, thankfully this has a workaround. I had about 13 dwarves claiming items from my "migrant corpse maker" which was just a walled in area which I flooded when I had the new migrants in there. When it drained, it must have activated this bug. >__>

This bug is easy to duplicate in the object testing arena. Just have some creatures fight to generate objects, then create some cubes of water nearby. The bug appears consistently in width-one corridors, less consistently in open areas.

Still happens in 0.34.11.

I have a fort with various bugged invisible items created by magma/lava and a flash-freezing river.

Bug 0006305 (door permanently stuck open with no visible reason) might also be related, I couldn't find any other possibly related bugs/causes for it.

One of my forts had a human caravan take a detour into my moat as it was filling, causing the wagon to "die" and drop everything everywhere, 98% of which was invisible once I found out about the incident. It also caused a large drop in FPS due to job cancellation spam from what I can only assume was something that somehow got left on the upward ramp at the edge of the moat, and was thereby accessible, yet inaccessible due to invisibility.

I had to abandon the fort and reclaim it because of this... Apparently it was a pretty big deal though since my engraver made no less than 5 images of the wagon being destroyed.

When items get frozen in ice you can dig them back out, but not melt them back out. At least that's how it worked with a freeze trap I made.

Can confirm that this still exists in 40.03.

@Mezmeer What is the workaround?

Multipartite

@Liens The workaround mentioned is probably the 'can be tracked via stocks menu, dumping them from there works too, makes them reappear' mentioned in the issue description.
