I can confirm that I've seen this. I had one fort that got a good number of scholars (it might have been because I didn't have a tavern; after I opened a tavern the number of scholars dropped off sharply). I started noticing that books were missing after a while. I watched the next two scholars that came to my fort, and both walked off with 1 book each.

I just watched two visiting scholars walk off with stuff. One with a quire, the other with a bound codex. I could not ask them to dump the items.

I also can confirm this, although the stolen book was written by a scholar who was a guest as well.

Ewcongogamer, if there was no major version change (0.34->0.40, 0.40->0.42) since last "occurrence check" or update log of last versions doesn't show something that seems like it could affect the reported issue, there is hardly any need to do "occurrence check"s with every new minor update of DF.

This report could rather use a save which would show some of those visitors leaving with items of the fort. If somebody can supply some such in recent versions, please upload it (zipped region folder) to http://dffd.bay12games.com/ and post a link to it here. Thanks.

I caught a thief in the act! Here's the save file: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11432

Open in fort mode, but don't unpause because the thief is a few steps from the border. Find the visitor Momuz Dastotikud, Naturalist. When he steps off of the map, the scroll called "Victory By Technology" will be missing from my fort. I don't know if it's important, but "Victory By Technology" was written by a different travelling scholar, named Istra, in my fort (Istra didn't have it with him when he arrived, he used my materials to write it, and he left it behind when he left).

Here are some interesting data about before and after Momuz leaves.
BEFORE:
- My library already lists the book as missing! It lists written objects (incl. copies) as 7, but if you go to Stocks -> Tools, there are 8 scrolls.
- The artifacts menu still lists "Victory By Tech"
- If you select "Victory By Tech" under Stocks -> Tools and hit [z], it zooms to Momuz
- However, the scroll does not appear in his inventory when you "view unit"(??)

AFTER:
- The library still lists written objects as 7, as expected
- "Victory By Tech" is missing from the artifacts menu
- "Victory By Teceh" doesn't show up in Stocks -> Tools anymore

For what it's worth, in another save file I've seen visitors carry off books written by my dwarves (the scholar in this save file hasn't written anything yet, so I couldn't test it). In those cases, I verified that the book was in their inventory as they were leaving, unlike this scenario where the book isn't showing up in Momuz's inventory. I have a save from that other fort, but it's after the thieving scholars left.

One more quick note: I've kept playing that fortress from my earlier save. It's late autumn now and all of the works from my library are gone. I've been receiving a steady stream of scholar visitors, and although I haven't been keeping a close eye on them anymore, I can only conclude that they are the ones taking the books.

I have seen this in my fresh install of the newest DF version (0.42.06), a scholar just walked off with one of my traded codices (I'm now down to one of an initial four). I'm running it on Mac (OSX El Capitan).

My guess is maybe the visitor starts reading the codex, and forgets to drop it before leaving?

I believe this is intended behavior. After all, visiting scholars also will write books/scrolls/quires if you have the materials available in the library, and often leave these behind.

With just a single Scribe assigned in my (fairly large) library and the default 2 copies, I've accumulated a collection of over 70 written works despite "borrowing" by visitors. It only really takes one good farmer and presser/papermaker to keep the library coffers overflowing with pig tail quires to write on.

Mind, I also play with the latest version of the Fortress Defense mod, and the frequent sieges/ambushes combined with visitor hostility bug (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=9650) means that half of my visiting scholars end up in the volcano.

I believe I've had a scholar bring a stolen book back later and put it in the bookshelf. (It feels like scholars are an endangered species in my world, with only one or two left in the wild due to world gen destruction of their habitats.) I just wish they'd only take copies.

Related issue, but I've just spotted a human visitor leaving the map carrying a mug he picked up to get a drink.
