Do you have buckets?
Also you may want to try channelling a hole in the surface of the brook, if you are designating a brook to gather water on.

you also have to set the pond to "fill"

How does one set the pond to fill?

Does that clear things up, Spiritbw?

Well, all the water on my map must be salty or something. Tried setting things up, got it set to pond(it SHIFT and p to set preferances for the zoneGah!>.<) but setting up a water source, even on the river at the level at the surface gives me no tiles for water gathering.

my dwarves get water from a murky pool to fill the pond, without me designating any water source zone. Do you have a murky pool? Then try deleting the zone on the river/any zones? Also note that you do need to designate the edge, not the actual water tiles. Maybe if you have set zone drinking only plus a defunct water zone, you are blocking yourself?

I just got the same problem. Underground farm plots with a channeled hole above set as a pond Several murky pools nearby but none of them show any squares of water source when constructing a zone over/around them. I didn't get a salt water warning upon embark that I can remember and I don't have any coastal water on the map.

Is there a way to see if a pool is salt or fresh after embark?

Yeah, if you create a zone over a pond and it has no water source tiles, that means it's salt water. It would be nicer if the game just told you it's salt water. I posted a suggestion to that effect: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=53964.0

Thanks Footkerchief. :)

That would be a nice addition to the water description.

I'm closing this one since it doesn't seem to be an actual bug so much as a shortcoming.
