Summary | 0009630: Ballista bolts sometimes don't work
Description | I have a 1-tile-wide long corridor with a ballista behind a fortification at one end and an HFS hole in the middle, blocked off by an artifact door. I set my dwarves to shoot at the spawning monsters with the ballista, but sometimes the bolts go right through the monsters without touching them or even generating a "the bolt missed" combat report. Once this bug appears, it doesn't go away until I unassign the ballista and come back to it after a while.
Steps To Reproduce | Fire a ballista for a couple months continuously, maybe the bug will come up.

Most likely the intended targets are prone, which seems to be proof against ballista bolts. |

I encountered this issue in one of my game, couldn't hit a cyclop twice. Surely a mega beast, even if "prone" should be hit no ? Here is a sequence showing the issue : https://youtu.be/1XZAcexXRaE?t=2342 |

I think i figured out the reason for it. The Bug still exists in Version 50.13. I found it odd that 12 megabeasts just would not get hit. They all had lost the ability to stand because ballista arrows removed their legs. I then did a full-heal with dFHack and the beasts therefore regainined the ability to stand which lead to the healed beasts getting hit by ballista arrows again. So I presume that enemies which have fallen over lose the ability to get hit with ballista arrows. (For megabeasts the bug is most noticeable since they are more likely to live through a leg amputation but i am fairly certain that any unit which lost the ability to stand cannot be hit with ballista arrows.) *(I can see a world where it is harder to hit enemies that lay on the ground but it feels rather bad if they cannot be hit anymore although it would kind of make sense that you can duck under a ballista arrow) **(Fortifications have no impact on the interaction, I tested it with ballista arrows flying through fortifications and without) |
