Summary0000983: High boots sometimes can't be made (when embarking over underground civs?)
DescriptionSame as title. The last few dozen generated worlds I've tried, if I embark anywhere over an underground civilization [Unnamed antmen, reptile men, I've not seen others] I lose the ability to build high boots at the Leatherworks and Metalsmith out of any material.
Steps To ReproduceGenerate world.
Embark.
If [c]iv screen shows underground civs, high boots don't show up in workshops.

Only happens sometimes, but so far the boots are gone only when an underground civ is shown on the C screen. Sometimes it works fine, but if one save has it, then it's stuck permanently. The option to build High Boots also does not show up under the Job Management screen.

In 40d, high boots weren't available to every dwarven civilization. Both boot types seem to be COMMON now, so I'm not sure that's still the case. Can anyone else reproduce this?

Apparently certain circumstances can cause the game to get your civ mixed up with the animal people civ (see Toady's comment on 0000017). That's probably the cause of this bug.

can't build high boots and there is no underground civ, where I embarked.

I think it depends on what mountainhomes can produce, if they trade high boots, I can produce them, if they can't, I also won't be able to.

^^^ Yeah, I do suspect the apparent correlation with underground civs is just a coincidence.

I can confirm I've also witnessed this behavior and I'd attribute it to civ preferences rather than any bug with underground civs.
