Summary | 0011415: Dwarves with clear path to rest of fortress cancel tasks due to socializing
Description | Some of my dwarves seem stuck in the tavern and spam cancellations of tasks, when there is a clear path to the workshop and stockpiles. I thought maybe it was items that I need to forbid, but a miner is doing the same thing for an accessible dig site.

Actually is version .47.02 - my mistake. |

For a report to be useful, it either has to contain a very clear and repeatable description of how to replicate a problem, or a save demonstrating the problem, typically uploaded to DFFD http://dffd.bay12games.com/ bugged saves section. However, in almost all cases like this there is something you've done to cause the situation, and a remedy for it (although a number of the situations can be considered bugs). It's very unlikely dorfs cancel tasks to socialized: it's probably the other way around, i.e. they cancel the tasks because they couldn't be performed, and take up socializing because that's the task they could actually perform. The most common reason for cancellation spam is probably burrows, where burrowed dorfs (e.g. due to a civilian alert) take up tasks outside of the burrow and then immediately cancel the tasks because they're not allowed to work at those locations. However, a bug report is not a suitable vehicle to get help to sort out gameplay problems. The forum is a better place for that. |

I agree with Patrik, a save would be helpful for looking, not to be dismissive of your issue but to better diagnose it. However needs like 'Worship', 'Socialise', 'Read <a book>' outside of the roles you set dwarves are usually green and can be overriden, but a large amounts of the need not being met or personal factors on a dwarf can mean they start uninterruptable 'purple<exclaimation mark>' activities related to those by game-design. The best remedy is to give them some time off to fufill their needs, or upgrade to the latest version 47.03 which has general improvements to bug-stability & AI tweaks to make them fufill needs & socialise better generally. |

Thanks for the guidance. I don't believe this to be a gameplay issue - no burrows are created, no bridge/path/barrier issues, and anything inaccessible is forbidden. I added the save here: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=14866 |

From the save, the failed "store in stockpile" jobs are targeting items in unrevealed sections of the caverns (likely refuse). (0002869) You can use the announcements screen to 'zoom' to the location of the items to quickly diagnose those cancellations, and "bulk forbid" to make unrevealed items unavailable for hauling. There is also a recurring failure to craft with ivory/tooth that's targeting a voracious cave crawler tooth in a cavern. The tooth is visible, but the only path to reach it is through an unrevealed downward passage, so the dwarf cancels the job. You can use the 'details' menu for the job to identify what tooth the job is trying to use, and the 'stocks' screen to 'zoom' to the tooth in question (which appears as a "corpse" instead of a "body part" due to a quirk). Then there are the dig jobs. They are likely the same issue--dwarves needing to path through unrevealed tiles in the downward passages/caverns to reach a particular job site. Unfortunately the cancellation doesn't allow 'zooming' to the dig site, nor is there any way to inspect the 'dig' designations to identify which is problematic. Your best bet is probably to cancel designations for the whole map, then be more observant/careful when adding digging designations. The first appearance of cancellation messages likely indicates that the most recent dig designation is at fault, though determining why can sometimes still be tricky (perhaps it intersects an unrevealed part of the caverns). |
