Summary0001622: Wells sometimes no longer draw water up multiple levels
DescriptionI extended the irrigation tunnel for my farms so that it went under my dining room, dug a channel down, added some floodgates etc, and filled the area with water. Its 7/7 full but the well I constructed above it doesn't qualify as a water source or fishing source according to the zone settings.

There is 1 z-level of open air between the well and the water, but that's no supposed to matter.
Steps To Reproduce1)make a cistern
2)dig a channel down to it
3)fill it with water
4) build a well on the channel
5)designate a zone around the well
6)see it not qualify as a water or fishing source
Additional InformationI don't understand, I've made wells just like this before in this version and had no problems.

The only thing I can think of is the well is trying (and failing) to draw water from the cavern water 70 zlevels below. There's actually 2 different cavern lakes on different levels on top of each other on this map.

By digging down into the open zlevel, I was able to place a new well directly over the water which functions correctly.

I checked and the well is definitely over a tile of cavern lake water as well as the cistern.

If you designate the well as a meeting hall, dwarves should still use it properly.

It sounds like the issue is that you're trying to zone the well instead of designate it. Dwarves can only zone-drink and zone-fish if there is an adjacent, open tile, directly below which there is water. This is behaviour that carried over from 40d - see http://magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Activity_zone

You don't need to designate or zone a well as ANYTHING to have dwarves use it. It just has to be built with access to water below it, with none of its parts forbidden.

oic

I tend not to designate wells as meeting halls to avoid parties. I guess I just never ran into this before.

@Malicus
Yes but I want to use zone only drinking and fishing zone orders. The map I'm on is dangerous as hell. ;p

Is your problem "solved" (ostensibly - maybe there's a suggestion in here for "longer fishing lines") Derigo?

@derigo
All active wells seem to be considered automatically zoned. I loaded up an active fort, turned on zone-only drinking, and forbade all my booze. All the dwarves who had been drinking then immediately dropped their booze and bum-rushed my wells (neither of which was under a zone of any kind). Later dwarves who needed a drink also went out to the wells. If you want a dwarf to NOT use a well, then 't' over it and forbid one or more of its parts.
