Summary0002627: Dwarves cannot collect water for "Apply cast" job
DescriptionWhen my dwarf tried to "Apply Cast" to an injured comrade, she brought some sort of cloth out of the hospital coffers; then she brought a bag of plaster from a furniture stockpile (since the hospital doesn't know how to store that yet); then she grabbed a bucket from a food stockpile and took it to the well. Now she's just sitting there confused.
Steps To Reproducehttp://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2656

F8 goes to the well. You can see the dwarf sitting there with Apply Cast as current job, bucket in hand.

Are you sure it's not just a job that takes a long time? How long have you tried waiting?

Multiple in-game days. The save is from the 21st of Slate. It's now the 23rd of Slate, and she's still sitting at the well.

Yeah, in-game days are really fast. Try waiting more like a month.

28th of Slate: the hunter is still sitting at the well with an empty bucket, now Thirsty. Meanwhile, the chief medical dwarf has also decided to Apply Cast (perhaps on a different injured dwarf, perhaps the same one; I have three dwarves with Immobilization Request on the Health screen).

Now two dwarves are sitting at the well with empty buckets.

Does it really take a month to put water into a bucket? I've never seen it take that long when dwarves perform Give Water.

1st of Felsite: Likot the Brewer, performing Give Water, brought a bucket to the very same well and filled it nearly instantaneously, then walked away with the bucket of water [10].

The hunter and the CMD are still sitting at the well with empty buckets.

7th of Felsite: the hunter succumbed to her thirst, gave up trying to figure out how to Apply Cast, and went upstairs to Drink.

8th of Felsite: after Drinking, she decided to Eat. She seems to have forgotten all about the Apply Cast job. The CMD is still at the well, not yet Thirsty or Hungry.

How on earth did you get them to use plaster in the first place?

Have you tried modding the dwarf speeds up? This sounds similar to the problem with the surgery, and modding the speed up then fixed the problem sort of.

Here's another save with the same problem; this one's been modded for speed, but with no effect on the job.

I had the same problem, then i forbade all empty buckets and the Dwarf used one with water in it left from a give water job.

Definitely seen this again and again.

Powder is bugged to begin with, it won't get stocked in the hospital, but in some circumstances people will grab some from wherever it is to try and make a cast... but they get stuck in the process.

Has anyone had a cast work properly?

I had a few different dwarves stuck on "apply cast". The save with one (from Mayday's 31.10 version) is here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2711

I tried the solution by Trilo, and it actually worked. The doctor dwarf successfully applied the cast when he had a bucket with water available.

It seems that dwarves are unable to fill buckets for the "Apply Cast" job.

I had a fort with what could very well be the same glitch; more than a dozen dwarves were tasked with "fill pond", so they would grab buckets, head to the well or a murky pond, get water, and bring it back. Usually. After a few minutes, I started noticing dwarves stuck at the water sources, still with the "fill pond" order but doing absolutely nothing as the other dwarves came and went.

Briefly putting them in a squad and activating them would get them moving again, though they would forget about their original job. And if I waited long enough they would abort the job themselves to go eat, drink, or sleep. With roughly 15 dwarves tasked, there were an average of two dwarves (I never noticed more than three) stuck at any given time. Also, it wasn't the same dwarves getting stuck repeatedly; it seemed completely random.

I was using 31.08 on OS X; I haven't checked to see if other forts suffer from the same bucket-filling glitch, but it could be easy to replicate; assign some water sources, make a bunch of buckets, fill a pond.

I've not had this problem, however my well is always inside the hospital, maybe that fixes it?

Confirmed also with 0.31.10. If you have a bucket with water the apply cast will work successfully. It's just that with apply cast they won't actually get the water themselves.

I just had this problem, forbidding the buckets does work. Interestingly, when I looked at the bucket using Task, it said that it did have water in it; presumably, the dwarf has no problem filling the bucket with water but for whatever reason can't take the water to make plaster without having it already present as an "input".

My guess is it has to do with the way plaster is currently classified.

Still occurs in 0.31.11. I'm looking at the bucket in the dwarf's inventory ('v' -> 'i') and it's empty.

I can confirm that this is still there in 0.31.12. It's caused multiple dwarves to catch infections from fully bandaged and sutured wounds that haven't been put in a cast :<

edit: in addition, forbidding all buckets or plaster results in doctors using splints instead, which solves this problem temporarily.

I encountered this, and while forbidding buckets did indeed cancel the job before my dwarf died waiting to fill his bucket, I had no buckets with water lying around (there was one in the well, deconstructing the well apparently emptied the bucket.)

To remedy this, the easiest thing seemed to be creating a pond zone long enough for a dwarf to grab a bucket to fill it, then destroying the zone, which causes the dwarf to drop the bucket.

Is there any workaround that does not involve trying to con your dwarf into using one, full, unforbidden bucket?

I have had it work exactly once - maybe because I forbade the bucket he used for the task, and then unforbade it, and he picked it up, now full of water, and off he went. (Or maybe she, I can't tell the gender on dwarf names).

Definitely still a problem in 31.12, and is causing infections all around.

0.31.12, still happening. Dwarf stuck at well holding bucket for about a season now.

I would also characterize the severity of this bug higher as it'd be easy to lose trained military because they can't heal injuries. The workaround forbidding empty buckets and well buckets, and forcing the dwarf to pick up a free bucket with water already in it, mercifully worked.

0.31.12, still happening, tis frustrating. Will try the workaround, though. How do i make buckets filled with water, anyway?

i have a savegame for 0.31.12: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2976

its heavy modded but the core problem about the one bone setter should be the same

also i would recommend we give this a highr priority, because getting dwarf (or drow :p) stuck with now workaround to unstuck them, kind of sucks :/

I just forbid all plaster and let them use splints. Works fine then hands-free, but plaster bugs out in this exact way every single time. Deconstructing the bed or otherwise disturbing the injured dwarf breaks the doctor out of his trance, but as soon as he tries it again it happens the same way. I've had no other problems with dwarves filling buckets on this fort, only when they're doing so for the purpose of a plaster cast.

Same problem here, I have a save from my game with no mods.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3020

The game is imported from 31_10, and I use Dwarf Therapist to change professions, no cheating though.

@partyalias - designate a zone for a pond and order it to be filled. Dwarfs will go and fill up buckets. BEFORE they dump them, delete the zone. Viola, buckets with water!

Also, forbiding plaster didn't work for me. The dwarf would still take a bucket and then gaze deeply into the well. I had to forbid all buckets, then let a splint be applied before unforbiding the buckets.

It's enough to forbid all of the empty buckets so that he's forced to take a nonempty one.

I got this in 31.12. It's not just wells, any water source can cause the bug. Thankfully the workaround worked.

This is still happening in 31.16. Forbidding empty buckets worked for me aswell. I don't have a well in my hospital yet so my Dorfs are using a stream to fill buckets. I didn't think to use the fill pond zone so I stationed my squad until they got thirsty to get buckets of water instead. Hope this is fixed soon, really breaks healthcare.

I think it is a pathing issue. I changed the layout of my hospital and that worked.

vadia: it's more likely that your bone setters have just been lucky enough to grab a bucket that already contains water, so they aren't trying to get it from the well.

This is still occurring in 31.16. One extra thing i've noticed: when TWO dwarves are on separate Casting Calls, one succeeds and the other invariably gets stuck. Forbidding all buckets works.
