Summary0005393: Military Dwarves not obeying kill orders, not following station orders properly, marksdwarves firing wildly into the air, etc.
DescriptionMilitary dwarves not following kill orders properly. Dwarves will often approach target, then stand stock still, and are reluctant to move again even after having received other orders. Marksdwarves often standing far too far away, firing wildly into the air at no particular target, or wild animals. Dwarves obey move orders, but not responding to other orders until first order is complete. Marksdwarves properly attacking kill order target, only after exhausting all their ammo. Military dwarves obeying move order stand close to target, but do not engage.

In this save example, 8 marksdwarves and 8 varying military dwarves fruitlessly chasing around a single necromancer that wandered in to the fort before the gate could be closed. They are skilled and sufficiently armed, but simply won't attack properly.

Is infuriating >:(
Steps To ReproduceNot sure. Dwarves sometimes follow orders properly; in this instance, dwarves absolutely refusing to follow all orders properly.

See 0000481 and its related issues:
- Distraction by wild animals is 0000149. If they're "firing wildly into the air at no particular target," they're probably either shooting at birds, or they're so blind they can't see straight.
- Difficulty following targets is 0000800.
- Ignoring nearby targets is 0001559.
- Ignoring new orders after killing a target is 0000929, maybe with some 0000114.
- Training instead of following a kill order is 0000634.

Is there anything in this report that isn't covered by those more specific reports?

Which of those issues does your save directly demonstrate?

I would suggest 0000149 may explain why the marksdwarves are wasting all their ammo before attacking this specific necromancer. I've sent marksdwarves to kill buzzards months, maybe a year before, but not these specifc birds. They aren't shooting the necromancer at all.

0000800 certainly seems to be at play here. The dwarves seem to want to occupy a space near their target, but instead of pathing to wherever the target moves to, they simply stay still and ignore further orders or impulses.

0001559 seems to be in play for most of the dwarves, but not the marksdwarves. They're happy to attack with their crossbows in melee mode.

Again, 0000929 and 0000114 may be at play; the dwarves seemed to have no trouble putting down the necromancer's pet corpses when he arrived, but they simply won't engage the necro.

(cannot follow orders) seems to crop up a lot, but I haven't noticed them trying to train instead of attacking this guy. Indeed the dwarves seem to be training more effectively than usual.

I'd love to append existing bug reports rather than create a whole new one, but I find it hard to find the specific bug I'm looking for. Plus, this one has an example save.

Just took another look at what was going on.

Looked at the melee dwarves, they were showing (No reachable valid target) as their job description. Randomly, the kill order was showing up instead, but it soon disappeared. The dwarves are getting their normal distractions (pick up equipment, get provisions, etc.) but this kept showing up.

They also seemed to have no trouble cutting down zombies on their way to whatever they were doing or not doing, and they didn't seem to have any trouble targetting the zombies.

It's all very weird. It seems like some property of the necromancer prevents him from being pursued. He looks to me like a normal human farmer necromancer though.

Could he possibly be a member of the parent civilization, and some anti-loyalty-cascade code is getting in the way? Just a guess.

This might be another issue, but I've seen similar behaviour recently with a forgotten beast and a giant toad.

A squad of 10 dwarfs just stands around, while the forgotten beast poisons everything in range.

However, I've only seen this happen AFTER some damage has been dealt. For example, after a flying forgotten beast has its wings broken. Did the necromancer have its legs broken?

This exact situation is happening to me too.
"A bird of prey so large and ferocious..." <---This guy is the megabeast.

My archers will exhaust arrows and beat the creature with their crossbows, but the melee dwarfs refuse to attack in any way despite the creature passing out, still, immobile, and on the same Z-level.

I am using version 40.13

That's just stupid. Single goblin with axe wiped out squads of armed dwarfs! Please change priority to high or something else. It's not fun, it's humilation. This is truly horrifying.
P.S. He become Axe Lord.
P.S. He mastered axe and fighting. He is very satisfied.

To add to what I said:
My Fisherdwarf, not in any squad, was punching the beast randomly.
My stray dog ended up biting it to death after the beast passed out over and over from exhaustion. It kept trying to fight my dwarfs but they would almost always dodge the attacks.
Neither my war dogs nor my Melee fighters engaged once.

I can confirm this in version .40.20.

0000149 - Not sure about in Dwarf mode, but in Adventure mode, the companions always run after harmless animals, usually in dangerous packs.

0000800 - I see this often.

0001559 - I'm having major problems with this in Dwarf mode. Literally I had a berserk dwarf kill several while the military stood around. 3 goblins killed several as well, and the military still only stood there and dodged repeatedly, but didn't even counterattack.

0000929 and 0000114 - Not really sure since I haven't made it that far, but still only the animals are attacking the enemies. Dwarves couldn't care less.

0000634 - I see this a lot with 0001559. If they aren't standing around the enemies, doing nothing, they're training while everyone dies.
